We made it through a great week of apple fun! We had all kinds of exciting homecoming activities this week too!
Thanks for all of the apples you sent. We used them to sort and to make different patterns. We put our apples in order by size and weighed them using a balance scale. We worked together to make patterns using paper apples and created a paper apple quilt. We read the book Ten Apples Up On Top and put apples in order from 1-10 on top of our heads using our class pictures. During centers, we created paper apples to decorate our classroom with.
Reading
We wrote our class story about Addison this week. Our Jolly Phonics sounds were: w, ng, v, oo and oo. (The oo sound is the sound you hear in book, hook, and foot, and the oo sound is the sound you hear in moon, boot, and spoon.) I’m amazed at how well the children are beginning to use these sounds in their writing. It is the neatest thing to see! Keep practicing the sounds at home. Your help is greatly appreciated!
During our literacy centers this week, we practiced putting letters in alphabetical order, sorting pictures of items by their first sounds, and writing words.
Math
We focused on shapes this week. We made shape collages by cutting pictures out of magazines and used feely boxes to match shapes using only our senses of touch.
During our centers, students worked on counting groups of items, writing numbers, patterning, and using tens frames (a grid used to help us count out groups of ten items).

We had all kinds of fun additional activities this week too. We had a real author come in and tell us about her book, Grandma’s Got the Goodies, on Monday. We had an assembly on respect on Tuesday. We’ve been talking about how we can be bucket fillers in our school. Ask your child about it – I’m sure s/he will be excited to share it with you! On Wednesday, a group of football players and cheerleaders came in to read to us, and on Friday, another group of high-schoolers came in to help us make homecoming flags. We also enjoyed the parade this afternoon! What a busy, full week we have had together!
Next week, we will begin our fire safety unit. We will be taking a field trip to the fire station on Thursday. Your child will be bringing home homework assignments each night letting you know what we have talked about in class. Please check their folders each night!
Have a fantastic weekend!
