We had so much fun learning about the weather this week! We started the week off by making rainbows to hang from the ceiling. We talked about the order the colors always appear in and the students had to organize their colors in the correct order. We read a big book called What Will the Weather Be Like?” along with many nonfiction books about the different types of weather. We made our own paper thermometers and practiced reading the temperature. Then we wrote about what we do at different temperatures. After reading the book It Looked Like Spilt Milk, we made our own clouds by ripping paper and then wrote about what they looked like. We also made umbrellas for our bulletin board.
In Jolly Phonics this week, we reviewed the different ways to write the long a sound. The students are getting really good at recognizing these teams as they are reading and writing them in their work. Our tricky words were because and want. Please continue to practice these tricky words every night. That is one of my biggest areas of concern as I worked on report cards.
In math on Monday, we celebrated St. Patrick’s day with a box of Lucky Charms. We sorted the marshmallows, counted how many we had, and graphed how many of each type we had. It was a lot of fun, and I’m thankful our leprechaun delivered the box of cereal to the room. We also did a really fun math activity with the wind. We created wind by blowing on different objects, and then we graphed how many huffs and puffs it took to get the object to cross the finish line. The kiddos had a blast with this activity! We used marshmallows and toothpicks to create 3D shapes, and we learned about the quarter. On Thursday, we practiced writing number stories (ex. KaRena had four marbles and Layen had two. How many did they have together?). We drew pictures to help us answer the question and we practiced writing the number equations. Today we played an addition and subtraction game using dice.
One of the highlights of our week was getting together with Mrs. Randall’s 2nd graders. For the next couple of weeks, we are going to be working with them on something called “Genius Hour.” During this time, the kindergartners who are partnered with one or two 2nd graders are going to be learning about something that interests them. They will be using technology, books, and other resources to learn as much as they can about their topic, and then they will be working together to create a project to show off what they have learned. Today, we got to meet our partners and start to choose our topics. It was so much fun, and the kiddos are excited to get the learning started. (I am too!)
Remember that next Thursday and Friday are Kindergarten Round Up, so there will be no school for current kindergartners those days.
Have a great weekend!
