We went soaring through the solar system this week, and it was so much fun! I love watching the children who truly engage in our units. It seems like the interested kiddos are different for each theme, and it is so much fun to be a part of their excitement. Our space unit has definitely engaged many of the boys. They love talking and learning about the planets and thinking about the possibility of life on other planets. I don’t know how many of them came up to me at some point this week with a random fact they know about a planet or the solar system.
As part of our space unit, we spent some time making a few space art projects. We painted space scenes complete with astronauts, and wrote about what we would do if we were astronauts. We also created our own planets using construction paper; many of the planets are quite interesting! We learned a fun song called Astronaut Song today. We practiced reading the words and did an activity where the students had to put the mixed-up words to the song back together again.
In Jolly Phonics this week, we learned about the times when c makes the /s/ sound. When c is before e, i, or y, it makes the /s/ sound. This is definitely a skill we will need to continue to practice, because it’s a little more complex than some of the other sounds. Our tricky words were “more” and “before.”
Daily 5 was especially fun this week. We learned about how to choose “Good Fit” books from our library. We talked about how books are like shoes. We need to make sure the shoes we wear are the type of shoes we need for the activity we are going to be doing (e.g. tennis shoes for running, high heels for dressing up) and how they need to be the right size to be comfortable. This is how we need to choose our books too. We need to make sure we are choosing books we are interested in and that we have a purpose for reading them, and we need to make sure they are not too hard for us. We practiced this skill on Tuesday, and the children did a good job of choosing books they are able to read. For fun this week, we did some reading in the gym. We took our rest mats and book boxes down to the gym, chose our own special places, and read. It was a lot of fun, and I know the kiddos enjoyed it!
In math this week, we did some work with maps. I used Google Earth to show the kiddos what our world looks like from above and how maps can help us get from one place to another. We worked together to make a map of our classroom. We also had a fun lesson with dividing graham crackers in half, and we talked about various ways to measure time (counting, stopwatches, timers, etc.). Today we played a game called Cover Half where the children worked together to cover half of a board with discs.
We are in need of more snacks. Feel free to send something in if you can! Good options are: graham crackers, cereal, fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, cheese crackers, etc.
I am sending home conference times today. Please check to make sure the time works for you and send it back immediately. I did my best to honor your preferences, but I’m willing to be flexible.
Have a great weekend!
