We began our Easter unit this week, and it has been great fun! To start the week off, we made some adorable bunnies to hang in the hallway. Each bunny is holding a watercolor painted paper egg that we made during center time. We did some writing about where we would hide the eggs if we were the Easter bunny, and we made an Easter bunny rhyming book. I threw some bunny research into the mix too. We learned about the difference between a rabbit and a hare, and we learned all about rabbit life.
In Jolly Phonics, we reviewed the different ways to make the long /i/ sound. There are four ways: ie, i with a magic e, igh, and y. Our tricky words were could, would, and should. We talked about how each of these words ends with the same four letters and that knowing that fact will help us write those words. We wrote an Easter story this week.
Jellybeans were the center of our math work this week! We counted a bag of jellybeans after we estimated how many there were. Many of the kiddos were so surprised to learn that there were 317 jellybeans in the bag! After counting, each student took a handful of jellybeans and graphed how many of each color were in the handful. We weighed some plastic Easter eggs that were filled with different materials with jellybeans, and practiced adding groups of different colored jellybeans together. Today, we practiced tallying different colored jellybeans.
We continue to work hard during our Daily 5 time. I am so proud of how many of the students are really starting to take off with reading. Each week, we go book shopping for new books from our classroom library for our book boxes. It is one of my favorite times each week. I love listening to how excited they are about certain books, and, as crazy as it sounds, I love listening to them argue over who gets which book. Their love for books is evident and so, so important in these early stages of reading.
Today, we met up with our second grade buddies for Genius Hour again. Since we have been researching for quite some time now, we’re going to start to put that research into action. We talked about different project options and the kiddos started to choose which project they would like to do. They started to work together to decide what to include in their projects too. I am so, very excited about this project, and I have learned so much from the kids in doing this.
I am sending home information on your child’s role in the Mother’s Tea Circus. Please let me know if you need any help with costumes.
Have a great weekend!
