This week was all about fun in the mud! The students laughed so hard at the different pictures and ideas in the books we read this week! Our big book was Mrs. Wishy-Washy. In this story, three farm animals jump in the mud. When Mrs. Wishy-Washy finds out, she gets upset with the animals and gives them all a bath. Of course, the second she turns around, the animals are back in the mud again. After reading the story, the students made their own Mrs. Wishy-Washys. They also wrote about one of the animals and illustrated their writing with pictures to match. To go along with this book, we read another book called, Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash. In this story, Mrs. McNosh does her laundry and spends the rest of the day hanging it (and almost everything she can find) up on the clothesline. When we finished the book, we brainstormed what types of things I would hang up if I was doing laundry in my classroom. They came up with all kinds of creative answers (from pencils, to books, to students!). Today we read a book called Mud Puddles and then we wrote about what we would do to stop a mud puddle from chasing us.
In Jolly Phonics this week, we reviewed the different ways to make the long /e/ sound. The students are getting better and better at recognizing the different vowel teams as they are reading. We have been practicing and practicing this skill, and I can tell it’s helping the students become better readers. The tricky words for this week were saw and put.
In Math, we did a couple of fun mud activities. We measured mud puddles with yard sticks and tape measures, and we played a mud puddle dice game. We also practiced a new way to keep track of our counts by writing the decade on the board as we counted. On Monday, we made number scrolls out of 100s grids.
We blogged on Monday about our favorite family members. If you haven’t had a chance to get on and read your child’s blog, please do so! They are working so hard and writing many great things! What they decided to write about their family members was interesting to say the least! Please, please, please check them out. If you need new instructions on how to do this, let me know and I can send some home.
We met with Mrs. Randall’s second graders again today for Genius Hour. The students are so excited about this process! They ask me almost everyday if we get to do Genius Hour that day. Today we were in the computer lab checking out websites and videos about our topics. We’re getting closer to determining what we want to do for our project to share what we have learned with the world. We have some big plans in the making for doing this, and I can’t wait for them to unfold so I can share them with you!
Remember there is no school for kindergartners tomorrow!
Have a great weekend!
