What a great week! I enjoyed meeting with the rest of you this week during conferences. We had great conversations, and I’m excited for what the rest of the year will hold!
We had a great Halloween party today! Thanks to everyone who helped to provide treats for our party. We made jack-o-lanterns with crackers and spray cheese and witch hats with kisses and fudge-striped cookies. The students had a great time parading around the school in their costumes!
This week we had fun writing about Halloween. The students wrote about what they were going to dress up as for Halloween and drew a picture of themselves in their costumes. We read the big book In a Dark, Dark Wood and wrote predictions for what would be in the box at the end of the story. Some of the children were right when they predicted a ghost would be inside! We also made a super cute scarecrow to hang in the hallway for the beginning of November. We did some writing to go along with the craft; we wrote about times when we feel scared.
We continued to review our Jolly Phonics sounds and tricky words this week. Please make sure you are still going through the sounds and words each night. I’ve been noticing that the last chunk of sounds (qu, ou, oi, ue, er, and ar) is especially difficult for the kiddos. We will be starting the next part of the program next week, and we’ll be adding more words to the Word Book. You may now keep the Sound Books at home to practice there. The Word Book is the only one you need to send back to school each day. We started to add books to our book boxes this week, and the students have been having fun reading each day. The books we have been adding are books we read during small group time and books we create as a class. Most importantly, they are books the students can read independently, and they are so proud of themselves to be doing this!
For math this week, we did many fun activities. We started with drawing Halloween patterns to put through our pattern box. The students are getting really good at making their own patterns! We played a couple of games to help us practice our tricky teens this week too. The students played a movement game, put number cards in order, and used a partner to show how to make teen numbers with their fingers. Today, we had fun counting and graphing with candy corn. Each student received a baggy of different types of candy corn (my Halloween treat to them!), and we graphed how many of each type they had in their baggies. Then we tasted each type and made a classroom graph of which type was their favorite.
The next few weeks we will be talking about food groups and the Food Pyramid Guide. I want to turn our dramatic play center into a grocery story. The children can help stock our store by bringing things such as: empty cereal boxes or other food boxes, empty milk cartons, egg cartons, cans with no sharp edges, etc. No glass please.
Have a great weekend!
