We had a great week of fire safety fun! I hope the kiddos shared with you all about our field trip to the fire station. They did such a great job of listening as the firefighters shared all kinds of good information with us! It was super cool to see KaRena’s dad get all dressed up in his firefighter uniform. Thank you for helping with this unit by completing the homework each night! I hope the assignments helped your family feel more prepared for the possibility of a fire at your home. We made some really fun firedogs that are hanging in our classroom and completed a fun listening and coloring activity. We also spent some time coloring in our fire safety coloring books.
We wrote Alexis’s story this week. She certainly has many pets! It was fun to talk and read about them. Our Jolly Phonics sounds this week were: y, x, ch, sh, and the voiced th sound. As we went through the program this week, I noticed the children were especially engaged in the ch and sh sounds. The stories are really fun, and the kiddos are having a blast making those sounds. We are so close to finishing our sounds, and I am amazed at how well the children are doing. Thank you for all of your help at home! It is really helping out!
We learned our first “tricky words” this week. Tricky words are words that don’t follow the sound rules we have already learned. We have to memorize these words, since we can’t sound them out. This week we learned I and the.
Math workshop continues to be a highlight of the day for most of us. The children love the different games and activities they get to do during their centers. This week was especially fun. We played a couple of fun counting games and did some fun activities with leaves. We graphed and talked about symmetry. During centers, we focused on patterns and counting. We made fall pattern books and counted leaves around the room.
Next week we’ll be starting our monster unit. We’re going to be making monster cookies, and I need your help! Please send ¼ cup of one of the following for our cookies: chocolate chips, M&Ms, peanut butter chips, peanuts, raisins, or anything else you find that might be good in our cookies. Please send your ingredients in by Tuesday.
I sent home information about conferences today. I tried my best to give you your preferences and to keep your family’s conferences all close to the same time. Please let me know if this time will work for you. I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you!
I also sent home information on the Building Better Readers program. I apologize for not getting it to you at the beginning of October – my newness to Lincoln is showing through a bit. This program is designed to help you, as a family, read together. There is a blurb attached to the monthly form explaining the program. Our class will be working on filling up the last two weeks of October, since I am just getting you the form this week. Send it back when the last two weeks are filled in with book titles, and your child will receive an award!
Have a great weekend!
