This week made me hungry! We had a great time learning about the food pyramid and healthy food choices. We read many books about the different food groups and talked about which foods in those groups were our favorites. We sorted food into the right food groups. Then, we wrote our own Good Food books in which we chose our favorite foods and added pictures of other foods in those groups.
Sam, the chef (a puppet), visited our classroom to show us his secret family recipe for “Silly Soup.” His recipe included all kinds of silly things, like socks, lotion, a spider, and a marble. After he taught us about his soup, the children wrote about what they would include in their own silly soup. Some of the students were super creative with their ingredients. They included things like garbage, toothbrushes, mud, and hair gel in their soups!
We used a pan balance to weigh different kinds of vegetables in Math on Thursday. We were surprised to see that the onion and the green pepper weighed almost the same. The lettuce, however, weighed so much we ran out of tiles to figure out its real weight. We also measured the vegetable heights using cubes.
We started the second part of the Jolly Phonics program this week. It has been fun practicing blending sounds together to make words and writing new words. We learned two new tricky words this week: you and your. Please remember to continue to go through the word books and the sound books each night. We won’t add new words each day, but the repetition of going through them each night really helps the children pick up on those words. During literacy centers, we worked on writing and reading tricky words using dice and writing words during write the room.
During math this week, we focused on writing numbers. We went back through the numbers 1-10 this week. We learned some fun rhymes to help remember how to write the numbers. The students’ favorite was for number five. It goes like this, “Fat, old five goes down and around, put a flag on the top and see what you’ve found.” The students worked on a number handwriting book for extra practice. They also played a fun game in which they rolled a dice and traced the number on a recording sheet.
During centers this week, the students worked on making a fall quilt with fall colors and handprint turkeys. We also made a thankful turkey for our bulletin board. The students added things they are thankful for on the turkey’s feathers. All of their responses were so sweet. My favorite response was, “I’m thankful for love, school, and my mom.”
Thank you for all of the supplies for our grocery store! The children had a great time going shopping and eating their groceries!
Have a great weekend!
