We had another excellent week in kindergarten. With our first snowfall, we had a huge obstacle thrown our way: snow-pants and boots! What a challenge that was! By the end of the snow’s life, though, the kiddos were pretty good at getting everything on and off for recess. It was a great practice run for when the snow actually sticks around.
We talked about Thanksgiving a great deal this week. We read stories about the first thanksgiving. We made pilgrim boys and girls to hang on our bulletin board, and wrote about what we are thankful for this year. We also helped to write a book about a turkey that likes to do all kinds of things that start with t.
We spent some time reviewing the vowel sounds this week. We sorted words by their vowel sound, and practiced writing words with short vowel sounds. The new tricky words we learned this week were: come and some. Please remember to send back your child’s tricky word book every day. A few students are missing some words because their books haven’t been coming back and forth. We wrote Gracie’s story this week.
During math, we talked a little about probability. We read a really fun story, Don’t Be Silly, Mrs. Millie, which was a teacher who came up with all kinds of silly commands for her students. She asked them to wash her hands with soap and walrus and warned them not to step in the poodles after it rained cats and dogs. This lead to a great discussion about events that are possible, impossible, certain, and uncertain. We also learned a great new game called Monster Squeeze, which I am sending home with the students tonight. The kiddos love this game; they have even requested that we play it a few times this week! We spent more time with the numbers 0-20 this week as well.
During centers, the children continued to enjoy our grocery store. They are all very excited to have their turn in that center. We also made turkeys with patterned feathers. The students are getting really good at making patterns; many are even experimenting with more complex patterns!
Our snack cupboard is getting low. Please send in something for snack time as soon as possible. (Good items to send are crackers, cereal, cookies, pretzels, etc.) Thanks!
We are in need of a few other supplies as well. Many of the students are missing crayons or have broken crayons. If you are able, sending new crayons with your child would be a huge help. We also need more glue sticks. It’s amazing how fast they go through them! We’re also in need of fresh pencils, Lysol wipes, and (really cheap) paper plates.
Have a great weekend!
