What a great week we’ve had together! We started our beach unit, and it has been so much fun. We’ve been focusing on sea animals. The students did some research on different sea animals, which gave us a chance to talk about the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We created our own sea animals for our ocean mural in the hallway. We read two great sea animal books, The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. After reading these books we made our own rainbow fish (complete with shiny scales which my rainbow fish shared with all of theirs) and wrote about what makes us good friends. We also made a hermit crab with all of the “decorations” from the book.
In Jolly Phonics this week, we learned a few more letter combinations that say the long i sound. We learned that y (like in “my” and “by”) and igh (like in “night” and “sigh”) can say the long i sound too. Our new tricky words were “live” and “give.” We wrote Lydia’s story this week. In our Daily 5 chunk of time, I introduced the choice aspect to the kiddos. They get to choose what they want to do during each segment of time. Some days they might choose to write first and then work on words, and some days they might choose to read first and then write. They love having this choice! It helps them feel “big” and keeps them interested in what they are doing.
In math, we learned how long a whale is. We had a length of rope that was about 100 feet long, which is as long as the longest whale in the ocean. We stretched it out in the hallway to see how long it really is. Wow! It almost went all the way down the hallway! We also practiced counting by 5s and by 10s and played a fun game with attribute blocks.
Next Friday is our beach party. Please send a sack lunch with your child. We will be eating them on “the beach” (our hallway). You do not need to send a drink. We will provide that. Also, send some type of beachwear with your child. (swimsuit, shorts, t-shirt, sunglasses, etc.). We’ll change into these things before lunch. Please also send a beach towel for your child to sit on.
Our 100th day celebration will be on Thursday, February 6 (unless we have more snow days). Attached is a list of supplies I need to make our day special! Please help out in anyway you can!
I will be sending home a class list for Valentine’s Day. It’s good practice for your child to write everyone’s first name. Be prepared, it takes awhile, so you might want to start early!
Have a great weekend!
