Yay! It feels good to be back in the swing of things! I know you all had great Christmas’s (I heard all about them!)! I missed the kiddos, and it’s good to see them again!
We started learning about winter this week. We talked about what kinds of fun things we do during the wintertime. The kiddos wrote about something they like to do in winter and we attached the writing to a (paper) cup of hot cocoa. We reviewed symmetry with snowflakes this week too. After making a simple snowflake with dotted lines, I challenged them to make snowflakes out of coffee filters and cupcake liners. These snowflakes make beautiful decorations in the classroom! We had some fun with penguins today. We read a book about penguins, and then made our own penguins. The students wrote different facts about their penguins.
We learned about shy “I” and tough “y” this week in Jolly Phonics. The students learned that “I” is a shy letter and it doesn’t like to be on the end of words. “Y,” however, is very tough, and so he pushes the “I” out of the way and takes his spot. This means “ay” makes the same sound as “ai,” and “oy” makes the same sound as “oi.” Our tricky words were “only” and “old.” We wrote our story about Kendra.
We spent a good chunk of time this week reviewing expectations for independent work time – specifically reading. The students helped brainstorm a list of what it should look like as they are reading, and we worked on building our stamina to meet those expectations. The students are doing a pretty good job with this. We have been shooting to read by ourselves for 10 minutes straight. We have gotten really close! It’s fun to watch them work so hard to read through the books in their book boxes.
In math, we played a few whole-group games. In one game, I “went fishing” for students who had something in common (same type of shoes, same color of shirt, same hair color, etc.), and the students tried to guess what was the same. In another game, I picked a person and the students had to ask me yes or no questions to find out who my person was. The students had a ball with these games! We also learned more about two-digit numbers and started to work with attribute blocks.
We have reached the end of our second semester already! I cannot believe how fast this year is going! Report cards will be coming home next Tuesday, January 14. Please look for them in your child’s folder.
If you have not paid for milk for second semester and your child would like to drink milk for snack time, please send $36.00, as soon as possible, or let the office know when you will be able to send the money, so your child will be able to drink milk.
I am sending January book orders this week. They are due back next Friday, January 17.
Have a great weekend!
