Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you all had a chance to share your love with the people around! We certainly did just that in our classroom today! We had a great time passing out our special valentines. It was so special to watch the kiddos as they opened their bags and took in the outpouring of love from their classmates. I just love Valentine’s Day with kindergarteners! Our valentines treats were mighty tasty too!
This week, we continued to explore Valentine’s Day. We wrote a list of 10 things we love. There were some creative answers and many that made my heart happy. We matched valentine pictures with their words and wrote a book about how to make a valentine. We also had a lot of fun sorting and graphing candy hearts.
In Jolly Phonics this week, we learned about the different ways to make the long u sound. We can make that sound with ue, ew, and u with a magic e. We also learned that sometimes that long u sound makes the same sound as oo. We practiced trying both sounds to figure out what the word was. Our tricky words were where, which, and who. We wrote our story about Nicky.
In math, we started to learn more about money. We learned that the penny is worth one cent, so we count them by ones. Then we learned that we count nickels by fives. We had many interesting discussions about the presidents and buildings on the various coins. We also played a fun game with attribute blocks and spinners. The students spun three spinners (one with size, one with color, and one with shape) and then tried to find the block that fit those descriptions. We spent more time with the hundreds grid as well. We practiced finding different numbers and becoming familiar with the way the grid is laid out.
Our Lincoln Olympic Games are in full swing! Last week, we had our opening ceremonies. We passed the torch through the entire school and then found out what countries our classrooms will be representing. We are France! On Thursday, we had our first games. We competed in Rock, Paper, Scissors, Ball Pass Relay, and Snowball Ring Toss. Bryleigh earned us a bronze medal in Rock, Paper, Scissors, and Layen and Kendra did a fabulous job in the Snowball Ring Toss. We’ll have more games next week, and the kiddos are excited!
Next week, we will be starting our nighttime unit. Please send a favorite nighttime item to school with your child for sharing. We’ll be using them for a fun measuring activity on Wednesday, so please have them here by then. Thanks!
Don’t forget to stay connected with us. We’re on Twitter @HansensKinders and on the web at mrshansenskindergarten.weebly.com. You can find all kinds of fun information and pictures of what we do during the day! Also, you can subscribe to my Remind101. I sent home notes last week about this. If you need more information, let me know!
Have a great weekend!
